Early SuccessAmong the key designers who made a bold and lasting impression on women’s fashion in the twentieth century, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883–1971) deserves special recognition. Born in Saumur, in the Loire Valley of France, Chanel survived an impoverished childhood and strict convent education. The difficulties of her early life inspired her to pursue a radically different lifestyle, first on the stage, where she acquired the nickname “Coco,” and then as a milliner. Many of the pieces in the V&A collection are Gabrielle Chanel's post-war designs created by goldsmith and jewellery-maker Robert Goossens. Together they found inspiration in the bejewelled antiques of Venice, Byzantium, Persia and the Celtic world that they saw in museums and books. Occasionally Gabrielle Chanel asked Goossens to copy an ancient pendant, although more often the historical artefacts served as muses from which to create something new.

Artist or Maker

As with all CHANEL designs, the suit followed her design manifesto that clothes should be elegant yet easy to move in, ultimately balancing comfort, simplicity and style. Her preference for supple fabrics and a cardigan-like cut for jackets ensured much greater freedom of movement for the wearer and saw the CHANEL suit become the preferred sartorial choice for many of the world's most celebrated women in the 1950s and 60s. Fashion month this year is unequivocally unlike any other due to the Coronavirus, which makes 2020 an apt time to reflect on the past and also imagine a new future.

Black remained central to Gabrielle Chanel's work throughout her career, with designs often bring stripped of decoration to foreground the silhouette and style of the dress. She also played with black-on-black embellishment in sparkling sequins and jet beads, and also experimented in black silk crepe, silk chiffon, satin, silk velvet and georgette. On a trip to Scotland in 1924 with the Duke of Westminster, Chanel discovered tweed for the first time; a fabric that would go on to define the brand's iconic suiting.

The little black dress

1927Like her suit, Chanel's "little black dress" also venerated the style of the dandy. This utility-based aesthetic, however, belied its exemplary execution, which relied on the refined, hand-sewn finishes of the couture. In the 1920s, day versions were often made from jersey, silk charmeuse, or crêpe de chine and usually featured long sleeves.

About the iconic Collection

1978 saw the launch of the first non-couture, prêt-à-porter line and worldwide distribution of accessories. As for her actor beau, Turner wore a navy blue suit with a white button-up, a satin light blue tie, and black leather shoes. The House of CHANEL, an international company dedicated to luxury, fashion, style and image, was founded in France by Gabrielle Chanel at the beginning of the last century. Mademoiselle’s audacious vision and daring spirit reinvented the world of fashion, beauty and style. With prices and quality for its flagship handbags under scrutiny, can the French couture giant reclaim the narrative?

In the years before World War II broke out, Chanel experienced a boom in business with four thousand employees and five boutiques on Rue Cambon in Paris. Along with other makers, Chanel is a target of counterfeiters.[86] An authentic classic Chanel handbag retails from around US$4,150, while a counterfeit usually costs around US$200. In 1996, Chanel bought gun-makers Holland & Holland, but failed in its attempt to revamp the firm.[9] The swimwear label Eres was also purchased in 1996.[33] Chanel launched the perfumes Allure in 1996 and Allure Homme in 1998. That same year, Chanel launched a travel collection, and under a license contract with Luxottica, introduced a line of sunglasses and eyeglass frames.

Lagerfeld’s death comes at a challenged time for the fashion industry at large, one when bets on diva designers are increasingly off. (See the swift demise of Raf Simons at Calvin Klein.) Here’s betting that Viard will steward Chanel for at least the next few seasons. Gabrielle Chanel included a nautical striped Breton top in her collection in 1917, and it became a cornerstone of her own wardrobe. In the ’30s, she was photographed wearing a striped top tucked into a pair of high-rise tailored trousers, an outfit that feels just as stylish and modern almost a century later.

The wider legal crackdown hasn’t only targeted brands making prominent use of logos either. Chanel said it is paying close attention to sustainability matters, pointing to its work with L’Atelier des Matières, which recycles unsold items and deadstock from luxury and premium brands. And while the legal frameworks protecting companies’ intellectual property are well established, whether the sustainability benefits of upcycling should be weighed against these hasn’t really been tested. It’s a tension that has played out prominently over the last decade thanks to the rapid rise of online resale platforms. Though some brands have begun to tentatively embrace the space, others have remained cautious. Chanel, in particular, has pursued high-profile cases against re-commerce players it argues are using its brand without permission and selling fakes.

And how she was a formidable businesswoman, the first of her kind to build an independent and international company, whose keen instinct has never failed her. By 1908, growing demand for Chanel’s millinery creations took her first to Paris and then Deauville, where she opened her first shop in 1914. Just two years later, Chanel would open her first high fashion showroom in Biarritz. Coco Chanel’s designs were a sharp contrast to the traditional and restrictive pieces that dominated popular fashion at the time. Her favorite fabric was jersey, which had been used for men’s underwear in the early 20th century.

Chanel’s sporty silhouettes emphasized simple and soft lines, which was a radically new style that freed women’s physical form. With the help of one of the male admirers who would provide key financial assistance and social connections over the course of her career, Chanel opened her first shop in Paris in 1913, followed by another in the resort town of Deauville. Selling hats and a limited line of garments, Chanel’s shops developed a dedicated clientele who quickly made her practical sportswear a great success. Much of Chanel’s clothing was made of jersey, a choice of fabric both unusual and inspired. Until the designer began to work with it, jersey was more commonly used for men’s underwear. With her financial situation precarious in the early years of her design career, Chanel purchased jersey primarily for its low cost.

Anna Foster, who runs the refashioned jeans brand E.L.V. Denim, has partnered with companies including Gabriela Hearst and The Outnet to help upcycle excess inventory. These days, she says she’s having about a conversation a week with brands interested in exploring collaboration, but the industry moves slowly. In a previous life, before she became a celebrated New York designer, Batsheva Hay worked as a copyright lawyer.

Penelope Cruz walked the runway for Lagerfeld's last collection for Chanel — held right after his passing (Fall/Winter 2019). Thanks to the practical-chic looks on the Spring/Summer 2018 runway, clear rain hats became a must-have accessory. Lily-Rose Depp clad in Chanel pink ruffles on the Spring/Summer 2017 couture runway. A standout from Fall/Winter 2015's cafe-themed runway was this look featuring an origami-like folding of classic napkins found at the brasserie.
